The Importance of Volunteering
It is projected that in Canada, the number of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other major neurocognitive disorders will double by 2031. In addition to the enormous costs that will be borne by the healthcare system, it is impossible to quantify the human impact of these devastating diseases. It is therefore essential to continue finding and implementing innovative ways to support the work that must be done in our communities.
Without volunteers, the Alzheimer Society Laurentides (SAL) would not be able to carry out all its projects or provide the full range of services it offers to support individuals living with the disease and their loved ones, as well as to raise funds for research. SAL is deeply grateful to its approximately 100 volunteers for their availability, commitment, expertise, and generosity. However, to ensure it can always rely on a diverse pool of resources, the organization is constantly seeking new volunteers willing to dedicate their energy and compassion to the beneficiaries of its various activities.

“Even a small gesture I can offer brings great comfort to my heart. For me, an act like this is about paying it forward.”

According to recent studies, volunteering may improve life expectancy. Researchers suggest that volunteering can expand social networks, improve access to resources, and enhance self-esteem, which may contribute to better overall health.

“When I volunteer my time, I feel involved in the activity, appreciated by the cyclists, and useful! I grow through my connections with the volunteer team. It’s priceless. The most beautiful ‘thank you’ of the day is the participants’ smiles; they warm my heart and fill me with happiness.”
Marie-France Richard Volunteer at Cyclo-Mémoire since 2015
